Pilot, it sounds like you just need someone that you can ask for help if you run into any problems.
One problem that you've mentioned is the choice, for windows users it's so confusing because they just don't really know what they want, there isn't really any best thing, it's whats best for you. The confusion of choice I see as like peoplle coming out of eastern Germany when the wall came down and standing in shops for hours trying to decide what to buy because they had never had so much choice before.
If your smart enough to do HTML then you're smart enough to install gentoo, I recommend this distro because it'll teach you heaps, and once you have it set up it's super easy to use, though it takes a long time to install & you want a fairly powerful machine, otherwise if you want something that's easy to use and set up in 10 minutes I recommend yoper.

Oh those games you mentioned, only one I miss is bf1942 (though this runs in cedega) UT2004 and Doom3 all run natively in GNU/Linux :)
