I use mandrake 10.1 and i have to say i thought it was great at first but oh the bugs. You call Windows buggy? The search function doesn't even work, i cant patch it and basically its a disaster. I'm just waiting to see if i can get gentoo off of a mag cover since i only have a dingy 56k connection. The only good thing about mandrake is the installer (ok thats harsh it does have its good points). The big problem with linux (and the main reason it can't compete with windows for home users) is that you still need to use the command line. For some people thats fine (i like messing around a bit and it can be quite powerful) but for most they just want to click a button and a program installs or it can be easily configured. Its getting better but basically for every command line that is required 50% of your potential audience are lost.
If they can get rid of the need for the command line then Linux will be much more competitive in my opinion.
