Basically they are an indication of a users reputation with other members.
The X button on each users post allows you to give 'rep' to a users post.
The more rep a user has the more priviliges they have - like access to a secret board, or ability to delete their own posts etc...
I'm not sure whether to keep this feature or not, thought I'd let you guys see if you like it.
This is not how the trader points system will work - that will be separate.
