If the DS was sold as a multimedia device, maybe I'd agree with you, but since this is marketed as an SP addon, it's clear that it's nothing more than a means for capitalizing on a market that Nintendo have not explored but has long been established on it's SP unit: Multimedia.
Liksang has made thousands of dollars on it's unlicensed MovieAdvance player for SP. It's got a thriving community, and has been reviewed by most of the major gaming sites.
To further justify such a venture on Nintendo's part, Sony's PSP can play multimedia by default, thus proving that there's a demand for such capabilities.
Copying? No...
Killing two birds with one stone? Yes...
Lastly, if this device were a means to compete directly with the PSP, a couple of key points would have been made on Nintendos movie player:
1- It would have been made specifically for the DS
2- It would be launched globally, and not just on NCL's website (japan)
