There's a few awesome mods for BF1942 you should get. Actually, two that are still played online.
Galactic Conquest (a star wars mod, which beats Battlefront in some respects), and
Desert Combat (a modern mod that plays a lot more like BF2). The DC guys were hired by EA, and you can really see their influence on BF2 from DC.
