I think changing sides on people would make them think more about which side you're on than it would make them think about their own decisions.
A debate is naturally supposed to be composed of people who stick to their core opinions, otherwise the debate would just fall apart in a wave of confusion or with the winner of the debate being whoever stuck to their opinion. Despite what you might learn from many debates, you're not supposed to lie or cover up your true opinion.
