For me, my problem isn't whether BF2142 is fun or not, it's about how EA is destroying the historical aspect that I've enjoyed so much in previous games of the series. There are plenty of futuristic FPS's to go around, namely the Unreal series which I find to be relatively close to the gameplay that BF2142 offers. It's a personal matter really, probably fueled by the fact that I've played the series from the very beginning and I don't want it to vastly change. I don't think anyone would really understand if they haven't played hours upon hours of BF1942 before any other BF game. Plus it's EA and if I have any doubts for one of their games I'd be best not giving them my money. FYI BF1942 and BFV wasn't developed by EA, it was only published by EA.
BF: Bad Company appears more modern and might be worth checking out, but since it's EA and they're known for making high promises and breaking them in the final product, I'm not keeping my hopes up.
