RE: Ridge Racer or Asphalt?
Asphault GT is somewhat of a cross between Burnout and Need for Speed Underground. It's a racing game in the respect that you're trying to come in first place, however the game puts the actual aspect of driving secondary to the action on the road, like avoiding collisions at the last moment, or causing crashes. The game's only driving aspect besides holding left or right, is the speed you get from using nitro. You get nitro from doing drifts or by way of some other bonus, so when you come out of a turn you can blast out of it. The tracks are very forgiving, and it's possible to play the game by just giving the car gas and letting it bounce off walls to the finish line. Drifting is the same as need for speed, which is to say, it's nearly automatic.
Ridge Racer DS is by far, less visually appealing than Asphault GT, but makes up for this in areas where AGT misses out, and that's the whole driving aspect. It pays more attention to driving, and requires more roadwork than AGT to compete and win later races. Drifting plays a big role in this game, and mastering it is what makes people keep coming back for more. RRDS has singlepak multiplayer support for 6 players, while AGT is multipak only.
