In a very surprising recent announcement, Square has confirmed that
Dragon Quest IX will be coming exclusively to the Nintendo DS in 2007 (for Japan anyway), and NOT to the PS3 as originally assumed. The long time console franchise is making a big change with this move, and the gameplay to is seeing big differences. Battles are no longer random, and up to 4 players can play and move completely independent from each other. Your characters also seem to be highly customizable. Have a look at this great trailer:
But that's not all Square has in store for the world's most successful gaming platform. A sequel to
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is also apparently in the works for the DS. There is confirmation of a remake of
Tactics for the PSP, but apparently the DS will be getting an actual sequel to the game, not a remake. This scan is pretty much the only thing we have on it now however:
That makes 4 massive titles in the works for the DS from Square, a true
Dragon Quest heir and 3
Final Fantasy spinoffs. And remember the beautiful remake of
Final Fantasy III just launched (which I am devouring), as well as
V for GBA and
VI is coming soon. With Square's massive backing of the DS, things can only go more and more up for the successful handheld.
