DS-Xtreme 2GB- Final nail in the PSP's coffin

Well, that's what it looks like, and that's what the product is being touted as by the very people who make it. Man, this thing looks AWESOME.

Moreover, the DS-Xtreme hands-down offers the best value for money ratio on the market, its massive 2GB of storage space is 18 TIMES larger than that offered by wishful competitors," reads the official press release, boasting the fact that the software pushes the Nintendo DS to its very limits.

Simply by connecting the cartridge to a PC via the USB port, players will be able to drag and drop all of their homebrew games, applications, movies and audio files over to the Nintendo DS for instant use. The 2GB memory capacity has enough space to hold over 20 episodes of your favourite TV shows or up to 50 music albums. Helping the device to remain future proof is an upgradeable on-board operating system that can be added to periodically when needs be.

Is there anything the Nintendo DS can't do? This product certainly seems to render the recently released official MP3 player more than a little redundant. DS X-treme 2GB will retail at $129.95 USD in North America when it’s released later this year.

* A single unified device – NOTHING else required

* Compatible with ALL DS original and DS Lite handheld units

* Optimal compatibility for homebrew, audio, video and other media files

* High-speed internal memory provides fastest possible file access times, NO slow-downs

* 100% Plug ‘N Play, no drivers or extra software required

* Easy to use upgradeable on-board operating system

* Massive 2GB (2048 Megabytes) of memory included

* Compact unit, no bigger than the size of an original DS cartridge – no sticking out!

* Gamers can design and publish their own OS themes to be used on the DS-Xtreme 2GB

* Lovable applications such as Sudoku, calculator and Pong act as a testament to the power of the skinning engine
* Custom engineered components such as a high-speed USB 2.0 connector.

What's the difference between R4 or M3? Other than the integrated memory. Besides, I prefer a non-integrated where I can easily switch through cards instead of being constrained to one.

R4 is still much better. I bought my R4 for under $40 (including shipping and microSD-USB adapter) and a 1GB microSD card for about $13 (including shipping and miniSD, SD, and SD-USB adapters), which comes out to $50-$60, less than half the price of the DS-Xtreme 2GB even if you get another 1GB. a 2GB microSD goes for about $30, which would put the total price at about $70. My microSD is pretty fast too, at least faster than a hard drive as far as I can tell.

AFAIK there isn't really any difference between R4DS and M3 Simply other than the firmware and label, but it looks like R4 has the better price.

Edit: One more thing, the DS-Xtreme 2GB can't be the final nail in the PSP coffin since the total price of it and a DS is $260, which is $60 above the price of the PSP now. DS + R4 + 2GB (1GBx2) microSD = $190, which is a few bucks cheaper than PSP, so if homebrew is going to be the final nail it'll probably be the R4 doing it.

I don't think any of them would be in stores since it makes it possible for piracy. I tried to sell a Supercard on eBay and it was removed for copyright violation, and they wouldn't accept my reasoning that CD/DVD-RW drives are just as easy to use for piracy. I've figured that the popularity of something for legal uses makes the illegal uses not really matter.

Yeah, but homebrew is independently developed and legal to download, plus they usually go through as many versions as PC software.
