FFVIII is highly UNDERATED. It can't be very overated because it never garnered a fraction of the popularity VII did, despite being better in every way. Did you just say Selphie was too good? You have to be joking. That ***** sucked...hard...
While I don't have a lot of hope for 'em, I do think DS and Wii Final Fantasy's have a better chance at really being good than the 'station ones, given that the move to PS2 is when the series started downhill... (FFVII and FFVIII are PC games BTW. PS1 FTL)

I preferred Irvine. His limit was one of the best (especially when going for Tonberry King). As a side note, I've only played the PS1 versions, not the PC versions (but never on a PS1/PS2). ePSXe made the games more enjoyable than even the PC versions would've been, with screen filtering/smoothing, save state switching for tough bits (or when you just want to know what would happen if you chose the other option), and the ability to speed up/slow down the framerate (skip through boring scenes where you ordinarily couldn't by setting the framerate to 200fps).

The End was based on chance, and it was uber-rare. A limit you get 1 out of every 100 tries, no matter how good it is, sucks, and is far from cheap.
Irvine was cool, but his limit was far from the best. Squall of course had the most wicked ultimate limit. Lionheart pwns Omnislash to hell and back.

I take it you never used the "cast a spell and pop the disc cover while using Selphie's limit" to manipulate the % of The End? If you popped the disc cover (which was hard to do with an emulator, but easy on a PS1) while casting a spell, the spell animation would not load ('cause the disc wasn't in), and you could keep hitting the do over option on Selphie's limit until you found what you wanted.
The problem with Squal's limit was it too was based on chance, and more often than not he did a crap limit when you really needed Lionheart.
