The shop might not take it, but did you try Nintendo yet? Your chances are probably still slim since it's an accident and not a manufacturing defect, but it's worth a try and if you get lucky you'll have a fresh DS at no cost. Don't give up so early and run straight for the expensive one just because you didn't break it yet, just look at what alex said...

If that spontaneously happened, I'm pretty sure they'd replace it. However, it's been more than 6 months, so I'm pretty sure your out of warranty. Nintendo is fairly lenient on their replacement policy, and they usually rather keep their customers and give you some free stuff to help out. (I called once just to complain about a game, and they sent me a GBA game for free. That was kick-@$$.)

My brother did the same thing to his GBA. That kind of damage comes from to much pressure on the screen. Either 1000lb person sat on it, or I'd say it fell, hard. Those things can survive Mt. Everest, so you must not take good care of it...

At least a new one's cheaper now! And you can get it in blue!
