RE: Reasons why Nintendo WILL be taking the DS online

There's a lot of needless techno-babble that's being thrown around here.

Pictochat can be used for a variety of reasons, one of them chatting with someone in a restaraunt, theatre, or mall you just happen to be in and so are they. None of my friends and family has a DS, so I have more of a chance of finding someone to play with because of Pictochat.

Two years ago I lived in a house with two other geeks. We hardly ever talked in person, mostly via AIM and IRC. One time we started up a teleconference (3-way phone call) to discuss what we wanted on our pizza that was soon to be ordered. We were all within 15 feet of each other.

Pictochat is not meant to replace normal communication methods, it's an addition to. You can't pull someone aside during a movie or other theatrical program to talk to them, but if the volume is down on your DS you can chat without disturbing others.

From our perspective as consumers, we don't have a problem paying more, yes. However from a manufacturer's point of view, and one who's already lost millions on the VirtualBoy and is soon to go against Sony in a new market, throwing an extra 50 bux worth of hardware onto the DS can severly affect it's pricepoint for manufacturer and consumer, delay production waiting on more chipsets, and become a larger pawn on the portable battlefront which is already convoluted with the GB, GBC, GBA, GBASP, and soon PSP.

I think you just countered your own words, saying how useless PictoChat is because you can just talk and then saying that you and your friends wouldn't know when you're changing games.

I agree that voice chat is a heavily required addition to multiplayer games, but since we don't have that yet on the DS, we need to take alternatives.

I play multiplayer with my brother a lot, both of us usually in our own rooms or somewhere around the house where we couldn't really talk (yelling is just stupid and walls distort sound quickly). We agree to get back in PictoChat once we get disconnected from a game, which is probably the best alternative.
Got something important to say but can't talk directly to them? Have an agreement like this and when that important thing comes by, disconnect from the game and go to PictoChat, simple and effective.

A 100 foot radius might not seem like much at all in the open, but when there's things between you and whoever you're talking to, 100 feet can seem very far.

Well put. Some people here can't quite understand that.

And I'm sure they'd let you use a DS on a plane. It's not exactly the same as a cell phone, which can be used to talk to someone on the other side of the planet. A DS reaches 100 feet. If a DS can disturb something on a plane, then I think I'll drive everywhere I go from now on.

RE: New Year

802.11 is not allowed on planes, although it may not cause interference. it's been so for a while.

RE: iTunes

I doubt it causes any REAL interference. The airline companies would just rather be on the safe side. Although using PictoChat just may cause a good amount of interference.

Actually it is allowed now. PDAs and Smart phones have "flight mode" which disables wifi, however recent FAA regulations have made it okay to use wifi while onboard. There's a handful of carriers which offer sky internet, most of them being the business trip across the pond.

I'm just saying since it has pictochat why not add it to multiplayer games.... pictochat and game at the same time.
