My router is a Netgear DG834GT, and is definitely compatible after reading other people's reviews. I thought most routers, if not all, should be compatible as they are just (are you listening arthur? ) a computer networking device that interconnects seperate logical subnets. In simple tems, it is a device that creates a standard wireless network for people to connect to given the correct security measures. So if the router doesn't support WEP then surely you should still be able to connect a DS using the wireless USB?

I don't think anybody in the local area would be able to get into the connection, but I don't think I want to risk it in fear of it happening and my parents going crazy and getting rid of the internet altogether.

You can get either the Nintendo USB connector or just about any other USB Wi-Fi adapter.
Ok, I have some final questions about the adaptor:

- If our internet is using WPA encryption, how would the DS connect to it via the adaptor?
- Are you required to input any kind of key to log in, or does the adaptor create an open access point for the DS?
- Would I be able to use the adaptor in my laptop as opposed to the main computer where the router is installed?
- When it is installed, only DS connections can be made to that adaptor, correct?

If I have the right idea about this then getting an adaptor seems like the best option for me and I'll have to get one for christmas - I thought I had one already but soon realised it was a BlueTooth dongle woops!

Only the wireless connection between your router and the device is encrypted, which is solely there to prevent people from accessing your network or seeing the data (such as passwords and whatnot) transferred over the wireless. A USB adapter is not dependent on whether or not the connection between your router and your PC is encrypted.
Most standard Wi-Fi USB adapters support for both WEP and WPA encryption, but you're never required to use encryption if you don't want to.
Any USB device should work in a laptop as well as a desktop, but on rare occasion there are some laptops or even desktops that don't output the power that the device requires.
The Nintendo USB adapter only works with DS and Wii, so I'm assuming it uses their proprietary wireless protocol rather than standard Wi-Fi. In that case there isn't much reason for it to support encryption. Connections with it need to be accepted on both ends, similar to Bluetooth, which prevents anyone else from using their DS (or even Wii) with your adapter without your knowledge.

Thanks for the answers Pilot, I think that's all of my questions answered. The only thing I am still wondering is whether or not the adaptor will work if I install it to my laptop rather than my mums pc, as she doesn't have that on all of the time, whereas I do. That's something I'll have to try, and keep my fingers crossed for, when I get the adaptor.

The only thing left to do now is find the cheapest deal!

Wireless Network

You are having problems connecting wireless. You need to check setting on the wireless router.

Check to see if your Modem is using WPA-PSK or WEP security.

If your modem wireless security was set to WPA-PSK you will need to change it to WEP as the Nintendo DS only supports WEP.A lot of new Wireless modems support WPA-PSK.If you do change the security to WEP you will need to change the settings on every wireless machine you use in the house otherwise they will not be able to connect anymore.

ON YOUR WIRELESS MODEM

Once you have changed the security to WEP you will need to enter a phrase in a box that will generate a key( Use WEP with 128bit key).

This key you will need to enter into your wireless settings on your Nintendo DS.

You may also have to enter you DS MAC address into your Wireless modems MAC Address filtering list.

You can get your DS mac address if you have Mario Kart.

insert Mario Kart

Select Nintendo WFC
Select Nintendo WFC Settings
Select Options
Select System info
The MAC address may be needed to be entered on your router if you have MAC Address filtering enabled.

Any problems post on here and I will try to help you.

Thanks junk, but I decided not to change the wireless settings. I have just ordered a Nintendo wireless USB adaptor to save the trouble.

The adaptors are quite pricey here in England, or is that standard for worldwide? I didn't want to risk buying one from eBay so I paid £27.99 on Play.com and that's the cheapest offer I could find. I say it's pricey, but I know it's going to be worth it once I [and my family] start playing people from across the world. Also, I know that I won't have to worry about changing security settings/people hacking into out internet connection, and I'm more than happy with the purchase.

Yeah, the USB adapter is pricy. It's about as expensive as a cheap router.
FYI, a router is not a modem (regarding Just4funuk's post) except perhaps on the somewhat rare occasion that the router features are built into the modem.
