actually, that's the big problem with the PS3...
...the types of technologies it's using aren't predicted to decrease in price any time soon, most noteably the Blu-Ray. In other words, PS3 manufacturing may not come down in cost until after Nintendo and Microsoft's next-next-gen systems launch...
The PS3 will initially be sold at a $100-$150 loss. This won't decrease for at least two years. If bad sales figures force Sony to drop the price, they may have to eat up to $200 for the first 5 years. With the release of the Nintendo Evolution and Xbox 9762, Sony will HAVE to drop the price, but this should be right around the time manufacturing starts to come down on their technologies, assuming of course Blu-Ray IS adopted as the new DVD standard (if it isn't, their just plain screwed). So, if Sony's lucky, they may level off after about 8 years. I don't think they'll be able to make up what they lost in those years with the remainder of console sales, nor game sales, especially considering there will be less titles for the PS3 due to difficulty in programming on the Cell.
Sony has royally screwed themselves in my opinion.
