Engineers are good for many reasons, but they're no more important than any of the other classes. Except Sniper, sniper is almost always useless.

I would have thaught that a sniper would be deadly. I'm always a sniper on GOW - My clan call me "Long Shot". I think it's a ridiculous name but ah'well.

Games initially designed for a console tend to suck more or less when ported to PC. I mean look at Halo.
