RE: How old are you?

I know with PC and PS it works with (blue book?) audio which is standard CD audio, and some PC games even use MP3s. But CD's and DVD's have lots of space to spare.

On the otherhand, N64 carts have a mear, 32MB of memmory, and Mario 64 only used 8MB.
Are all cart based system using Midi for audio?
If so how does this differ from midi on computer, what makes it sound so much better then the carp i get off the net?

Carts on the n64 have used Mp3's for audio to great effect. It won't be suprising to see the same feat accomplished on the DS.

Cart based systems tend to use PCM music, which could be considered similar to MIDI. The reason it doesn't sound the same as MIDI's on your PC is because Nintend's sound fonts are much better. All systems are capable of PCM at some level, and for video game purists, it's the preferred medium for game music.

Music that sounds real detracts from some game's "digital charm," while making others more immersive. Game Music is just background ambience to me, and if the melody is good, the means in which it's created becomes moot.

Yes, music plays a great part in the game, it comes along the importance of graphics. Emagine having no sound in Zelda, Mario or Resi. Music creates atmosphere that immerses you into the game. Tetris accomplished it and we all still know those damn tunes (along with seeing blocks falling while trying to get to sleep!).

Having the right music for the game matters alot and the quality is to be taken into account but we all know if we hear it a little too much it will get stuck in our heads for a very long time (Saling on the hyrule sea? - lol!)

Yup! FFTA has great music that never gets boring. Shame about the actual gameplay but yes all the final fantasy games have amazing music in them. Crystal Chronicles is a prime example.
