LoL, it's soo funny the offense u guys take when someone calls a game, for what it's worth, from an industry standpoint.

Did I say Zelda was bad, or sucked? NO. Yet the responses here, and backup responses act like I've just sold you Pee as Lemonade.

Buck up folks, Zelda has revolved around Gimmicks, just the same as every Nintendo Console has. Now say this with me, Zapper, R.O.B., Fitness Pad, U-Force, Rumble Paks, 3D Glasses (same as segas, only released in japan), Eject Buttons for Cartridge Systems, Fishing Sonar, handheld to console connectivity, Gyroscopes, Disk System, Stock Market Modem, SatellaView, Microphones on controllers (famicom), and Touchpads. I know I'm missing some, like the mini blow up hot air balloon/airship for an obscure famicom game, and a few others I'm sure.

Gimmicks invigorate, stimulate, it excites people, and it's the oldest tried and true marketing technique known to man. An example is Nintendo being the first Card making company in Japan to sell cards with Mickey Mouse on them... Why buy any other card when you can have cards with Mickey on the back? Gimmickry.

Don't get your panties in a bunch Shadowmarth...

I'm sure you can't believe I called Zelda for what it's worth, and you probably took such shock from reading it because you've just realized I'm right.

Zelda 1's gimmick was a Gold Cartridge, and BATTERY BACKUP, which was an industry first.

Zelda II's gimmick was side scrolling action and Dragon Quest inspired overhead exploration.

Zelda: A Link to the Past on Snes' gimmick was going to the past

Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time's gimmick was controlling time

Zelda 64: Majora's Mask's gimmick is well, the Mask

Zelda Wind Waker's gimmick was controlling Wind

=====

Now that's just the console games, should I even mention the portable versions? I can touch up upon some of the more notable gimmicks for your perusal if you'd like. Here goes:

Zelda Oracle of Seasons - Same game engine and resources as Oracle of Ages. The gimmick is the minigames and linking up with Oracle of Ages to trade rings and open up the game's 3rd chapter

Zelda Oracle of Ages - Same game engine and resources as above. The gimmick is the harp's time travel, and linking up with Oracle of Seasons to trade rings and open up the game's 3rd chapter

Zelda Four Sword's gimmick is multiplayer

Zelda Minish Cap's gimmick is his cap

--------

Zelda is a great game, perhaps one of the greatest games ever created next to Donkey Kong. The reason for this is because it's gameplay engine is soo well designed, that adding a new element, aka gimmick, is all that's needed to build upon what's already been established. There are facets in Zelda which have remained a constant since Zelda 1, you have to always get items from the previous dungeon to beat the next dungeon for example, or you're always going to find a boomerang in the game. The point is, each Zelda game is only as good as it's gimmick, because without it, we'd still be playing the same game from 1986 with better graphics...

Hi, I'm x999x and I'll be your tour guide today!

Are you Shadowmarth too? If so, I didn't mean any offense, it's a figure of speech here in the 'States.

Regarding Donkey Kong, it is classified as one of the greatest games ever made for a reason. At that point in video game history, every game was a shooter, a pong clone, a racing game, or a pinball machine. What Donkey Kong did for gaming was introduce Action Platforming, whereby challenging gamers in a new way that didn't invlove mashing a button to kill aliens, but precisely timed button presses to make Mario jump over barrels, and moving Mario in an position to execute a jump from one platform to another safely.

This introduced a new level to gaming, and a new level of dexterity required of gamers, separating the moms and dads who stuck with pacman and the younger generation of gamers that needed more stimuli to keep their attention. This is why graphics continue to get better, and games continue to get deeper, all of which started with Donkey Kong.

Next on our tour...

x999x, I'm tired of arguing with you. If what you said was true then every innovation in the history of games has been a "Gimmick". Most of the gimmicks you mentioned were copied by other companies and are still used (popularly) today. Rumble packs, backup batteries (though memory cards are more popular these days), the excercise pad (think DDR), and more. They are classic games. Each one of those gimmicks you mentioned were new and exciting. Many are still used today, even though they are no longer new. By your definition, most gameplay elements and founding values of entire genres are gimmicks.

Ugh. Maybe I'll take a break from this forum for a while. Battleweek 6 is up for Star Wars Battlefront and my clan is in competition.

LoL!.

There's a problem here if you consider yourself arguing, I think that's why you're not addressing the issue, and instead letting nostalgia and your emotions dictate your reasoning.

Definition of Gimmick: An innovative stratagem or scheme employed especially to promote a project: an advertising gimmick.

Every Zelda has it's gimmick in the title, does it not?

Every zelda is the same game underneath that layer of gimmickry is it not?

What is the fundamental purpose of Nintendo?

To make money obviously, therefore they are a marketing giant, of which has built a reputation on making franchises out of excellent game engines with an established line of mascotts.

Looking at things subjectively, from an industry standpoint, and I think you'll see the real marketing machine that is Nintendo. They are to video games what McDonalds and Disney are to Children. A staple in society childhood as something you did as a kid that you will inevitably share with your children whether you are aware of it or not. In either case, their marketing have done their job.

This is business, it's about dollars and cents and fortunately, such gimmickry has helped push the game industry forward while continuing to take our money :)

Again, I'm not arguing the quality of these games, I'm just stating the fact that without a new gimmick to promote a game's engine, the bar is not raised amongst it's competition and there's no need to purchase it if you already own part 1. Take a look at computer games, there's a handful of developers that provide engines to publishers to use for their own games, like iD and LithTech for example. What sells those games that use these engines is the gimmick that distinguishes one title from the other, because they all run on the same game engine and are all the same thing under neath.

man i cant be bothered to get in to arguments but by saying this your calling nearly every game ever released "a gimmick".
Just because the game offers something new or is different to its predecesor doesnt mean its a gimmick, you can go on all you want rambling about gimmicks but the fact is, is that your wrong here.
By using you definition of a gimmick i can say the new gran turismo is purely a gimmick because it has new cars or a new soccer games gimmick is it has new players.
