Right now I'm gonna wait on Vista to be final before trying it on my pc again. I might download/try it on a college test pc instead...

BTW Microsoft is making me wonder, with all these free pre-release version downloads, do you think they might be planning to release a free unlimited version of Windows to compete with Linux for price? Obviously they won't make Windows entirely free, but they might have a free version packed with only the mandatory features, or maybe similar to the way they described the features of pirated versions would be.

Nevermind, it looks like the RC1 download is closed at the low number of 100000 downloads, but it also looks like they'll open it back up in a few weeks.

that would be a really good idea to let people try it out before they buy and maybe get more people confident in the new OS, i mean i really want it and all but the price of it will kill me. But i doubt they will actually do it..

M$ has always had Beta and RC downloads of their systems. XP had some. Since XP and Vista both use the keycode + online activation, I seriously doubt they'd have a free version. Not all Linux distros are free. Red Hat, SuSe, and others have versions that cost money. Most distros that cost have extra features, like Pilot pointed out, and you are also paying for the tech support... While M$ may eventually do that, I don't forsee that happening anytime in the next few years.

Downloading Vista RC1 now, gonna try and install it on an old broken machine of mine...
