This topic will attempt to give guidelines for showing your enthusiasm and love for a game or system without sinking to the depths of fanboyism. We'll start off with a description of Fanboys.
1. What is a Fanboy?
A Fanboy is an extreme fan of a particular game or system. Sounds harmless, right? Wrong. Fanboys can be very disruptive and annoying in their quest to uplift their favorite game/system.
2. What are the symptoms of Fanboyism?
A Fanboy tends to constantly praise his favorite game/system, ignoring all others. They blindly follow their game/system, praising it constantly and refusing to admit that it could be flawed, or *gasp* not the best game/system ever.
3. What tends to cause Fanboyism?
Oftentimes it is caused by a lack of a balanced gaming library. Having only played a handful of games, when the potential Fanboy plays one of quality, he is amazed. He them runs out and tries to show his love of the game/system by singing it's praises, and instead ends up being incredibly annoying.
Now that we have established what a Fanboy is, we will discuss how to properly support your feelings for a game.
4. I played (insert game/system here) and it's the best game/system ever!
Ah, here's where Fanboyism rears it's ugly head. You have become blind to the gaming world around you, save for this one game/system. Let me let you in on a secret: There is no "Best game/system ever". Regardless of what you feel, what your friends feel, the reviews the game got, whatever. There will never be a "best" game/system because everyone has a different opinion on what the best is.
5. But I love it!
Yes, but making ignorant claims about a game being the "best ever", actually makes you and the game you are praising look worse. It makes you appear to be close-minded and shallow. The poor grammar that typically comes from the sheer single-mindedness of a Fanboy's devotion only makes matters worse.
6. So how do tell others about how much I enjoyed it?
Give specific reasons WHY you liked the game/system. Was it the sound? Graphics? Gameplay? A certain level that blew you away?
You can spread your feelings about a game/system much more effectively by simply explaining what elements from your favorite game made it so incredible. By doing this, and replacing the phrase " Best game ever" with "My favorite", you will be converted from a Fanboy, to an intelligent and well respected board user.
