my first impression of linux was "nice but needs work". of course i was only judging based on the GUI (which is pretty seperate from linux...more so than the gui for windows). it takes alot of getting used to. ull need to learn commands to install some software but its not too bad.
the worst thing is hardware support. at the moment i cant connect wirelessly to anything. my dial-up modem doesent work and graphics support is a bit patchy. if i did alot of fiddiling i might be able to improve it but i couldnt be bothered :P. overall i like it but i wouldnt replace windows with it. games are nasty to get running on it. but if u just wanna browse the internet (and use an ethernet cable) and use it for other things like word processing or as a server then its pretty kewl. and of course it costs us zip all :D. at the moment i use mandrake 10.1 which is way outta date so hopefully ull have a better initial experience than me. |

I'm running Linux Ubuntu on my 350MHz server (made from old parts I've upgraded from), but like all the distros I tried, there's always a problem that drives a Linux newbie like me crazy, which in this case is almost no GUI visible server features and no GUI for setting up hardware (I'm stuck with a refresh rate of 60Hz because it doesn't recognize my monitor or video card). I also had the problem with Linux not detecting a wireless card, so I had to swap it with the ethernet card from the family computer which is almost never used anymore (although still runs 24/7 for no apparent reason).
I managed to get the Linux TeamSpeak server running without a problem, it was actually simpler than the Windows version I think. But as for all my other servers (HTTP, FTP, mail, whatever else), I'm directing pilot51.com to my personal page on my ISP, which contains contact info and a few other things to keep people slightly up to date on what I'm up to. As far as gaming is concerned, Windows all the way! |

Yeah I tried Debian before giving Ubuntu a try because my bro has it and he was insisting that I try it, but when I did it ran into a strange installation problem, I think it was that it couldn't detect the CD drive even though it was running through the entire pre-installation from the CD.
I think my demands for a Linux distro are uncommon because most people with my demands have either time to learn it or already know it. All I really want it something with fairly extensive and easy to use server features and easy to use configuration GUI (like hardware setup and whatnot). I know it's out there, at least the hardware configuration exists on I believe Mandrake and Fedora, and server features should at least meet up to the features and ease of use of Windows Server 2003. |
