Check out that link for more info, they've also got a lot of cool screenshots!

Take note of the one which shows actual photos of the players as icons over their in-game racers! It actually makes you look like the person you're racing! Notice Mario's hat and signature mustachio added to the bloke's icon in the foreground. I didn't get a chance to read through the arcade pamphlet yet, but I recon your picture is taken from the cam located above the screen.

Hmmm... I wonder... Even though I don't believe the rumors about the "DS Camera", they could do the same thing for online play, or just something similar.
