DS Chip Advanced (originally posted by mash-mod)

Hey everyone. First of all, this is a great site, nice to see such an active community of DS gamers, it's pretty neat. Anyway my first post is just to let DS gamers know of a hardware project I've been working on for the DS and the new re-release of my site that feature it.

It's called the DS Chip Advanced. It's a small chip (10 wires) that I have designed and built that adds two extra functions to the X and Y buttons of the console when GBA games are being played on the system. The first function let's you use the L and R buttons as the X and Y, so there are 4 face action buttons, while the second mode is a a Turbo buttons mode that uses X and Y as turbo buttons for A and B, pretty sweet for shooting games. Anyway I just wanted to get the word out to people, this community seemed liek the perfect place to start. The chip are being sold on my site for a reasonable price and if anyone's interested there's a free installation for it happening right now. There's also some full documents and a demo video of the chip in action.

You'll find on my site some pretty cool mods I've been working on during the past couple of years and plenty of cooler ones to come in the future. I hope to hear your feedback, cheers!

Mash-Mods is an unknown quantity at this point
The DS is easy to open and its internal design is quite simplistic and durable, unlike newer hi-tech gadgets like the Ipod and even the PSP. Only one way to find out for yourself anyway :-). BTW, Mash-Mods is international, I've had customers from all over the world. If you read the first news posting, there is a short history of the site and company.

It's pretty simple yeah, I was careful in designing it to be as efficient and user-friendly as possible (LED indicator etc). The only obvious draw-back is that the chip consumes some power for the circuit, that's about it. This used power however dones't reduce the battery life in any dramatic way, it's quite efficient.

The PSP is actually quite easy to open.

It sounds like fun and all but the advertised bit, about using the x and y buttons for l and R when playing gba doesnt sound very practical at all. The whole point of having back buttons is to hold on to them during gameplay or easy access while holding face buttons.

Sorry for the rant, but i like your other ideas, it was only a matter of time before people started to 'enchance' the DS.
