Lite takes over Europe
Officials from Nintendo of Europe announced today that the DS Lite has sold more than 200,000 units in ten days, following its European launch on June 23rd, and are claiming the DS now leads the handheld market in Europe, ahead of the PSP.
Nintendo's European marketing director Laurent Fischer said “During Nintendo DS Lite launch weekend, retailers across Europe said that they had never seen such a vast array of different people buying the product, everyone from business men to young women to grandfathers.”
The hardware sales vary wildly from country to country, however. The UK's launch was a quiet 35,000(frickin' haters), while the system seemed much more popular in countries like France and Germany.
According to Nintendo of Europe, the Nintendo DS has now secured the lead in the handheld market in Europe, with sales of the format exceeding 5 million. No sales figures from Sony are available to compare directly, with only a “shipped” figure of almost 6 million for all territories bar North America and Japan.
Other facts and figures revealed include how nintendogs has now topped 3 million units, Brain Training has crossed the 250,000 mark and Animal Crossing has shot to over 600,000 copies sold.
