New Micro-friendly Play-Yan

No more mini-game downloads, but movie play-back is much easier.

Nintendo announced it will release a new model of its Play-Yan multimedia play-back peripheral, originally for the GBA. The new model, called Play-Yan Micro, will be released simultaneously with the GBM on September 13 in Japan. Sales of the old model will end on September 11.

On the surface, the Play-Yan Micro exactly the same, even its size and weight. It comes in the shape of a GBA cartridge, measures 58.5 x 43.4 x 11.0 mm, and weighs 16 grams. It can be connected to the Game Boy Micro, GBA SP, DS, and users can play back movies and music by inserting an SD memory card. The peripheral supports MPEG-4 movie files in ASF and MP4 format, and MP3 audio files.

The big difference between the Play-Yan and the Play-Yan Micro is the MP4 support. On the original it had to download a software patch to play them. The menu is is also updated, looking much more stylish.

On the other hand, downloadable games are gone. On the original you could download 12 mini-games. so tough luck there.

The Play-Yan Micro can play three hours of movies or 10 hours of music on the GBM. It will be able to run a bit longer on the GBA SP, up to about four hours of movies or 16 hours of music. Running on the DS, it can play back five hours of movies, or 20 hours of music. I'm kinda confused as to why that is though lol.

It can only be bought online, and it costs about 46 bucks
