I wasn't saying anything about it being cool or fun, just that it doesn't take as much skill as a real instrument and that it shouldn't be used to indicate instrument-playing skill. For the most part it only proves eye and finger coordination and timing skill. I used AmplituDS as a comparable game to Guitar Hero and AmplituDS is one of my favorite homebrew games.

Yes, because playing instruments involves neither eye and finger co-ordination or timing skill. Also, the Rock Band drums skill certainly transfers at least to some degree, since it's so similar to the real thing.

I really hope that was sarcastic. How can you expect "thousands of dollars" and "years of practice" for playing a real instrument to not involve any of those skills?
Playing real instruments usually involves keeping with a specific beat, while Guitar Hero involves hitting the mark when the screen tells you to.
I admit I've never really played a real Guitar or even a Guitar Hero guitar, but I can tell by looking at it that a real guitar takes more finger coordination than a Guitar Hero guitar. In Guitar Hero you need to press a specific button and flick the lever at the right time, while with a real guitar you need to hold down a set of strings at specific locations and then strum them at a certain speed and strength (sometimes one, a few, or all).

I agree, but I wasn't talking about Rock Band. Even for Guitar Hero I expect some skill would transfer over, but it probably wouldn't be very noticeable.

Of course that was sarcastic. And the previous sentence was thoroughly serious. I have a fair amount of musical experience, at least. I am in band at school, I play baritone, and I have attempted to learn the guitar in the past. It's not easy, and I generally can't keep at it. I keep getting a little better every time I pick it back up though, so by the time I'm 60 I'll be able to rock out a bit.
