Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo. Whether they were caught flat-footed or are just acting all misterioso to generate buzz is up for debate (you probably know where we fall on this one), but our old friends at Nintendo have been notoriously coy when it comes to divulging details about their new next-gen Revolution console. They didn’t show off a working demo at E3 last month (or even tease us with any clips of game play) and they’ve been tight-lipped about its specs, but lately it seems like there’s been a crazy amount of attention focused on the Revolution’s controller. We’ve already spotted way more fakes and ‘shopped concept designs than we care to think about, but they definitely have something cooking. Nintendo mac daddy Reggie Fils-Aime has been dishing some dirt, revealing in an interview with EGM that they’re already showing off the controller to developers. He says that it will definitely be configurable (he doesn’t get very specific about how) to make it work with all of the vintage Nintendo games they’re going to be offering for download and that it’s this configurability that has developers all excited about the possibilities for what you can do with new games.

"The thing that I always find surprising, and certainly in the last year I've had wonderful opportunities to spend quality time with a number of our key third-party publishers, is when you sit down and share the innovation with them, just how excited they get. I saw it firsthand with DS; we're seeing it now with Revolution. The fact that you and your fans haven't seen the controller doesn't mean that no one else has.

I mean, again, and Mr. Iwata did this during his presentation on Tuesday—if you just think about it, we're going to have the ability through wireless internet to download all of your great games from NES, SNES, N64. Think about it: Each of those controllers were different. How are you gonna play? That captured some the imagination of what our controller needs to be able to do, and certainly as you get into the meat of that type of innovation with the developers, their eyes truly light up because they start to imagine what's possible with that type of configuration, which is vastly different than a sheer horsepower type of game."

RE: Reggie Dishes Some Dirt

Duh. If it weren't a touch screen. The likely you would have a controller with a hell of a lot of buttons cramed together.

RE: members: who do you think...

It's going to be very intresting how they do it.
NES and NES controllers are almost identicle

Using a SNES style controller for NES games ought not be a problem...

however, compare the N64 contoller to the GC or S/NES contollers...
<- i love this one,
felt the need to put that one up...

The problem with touch screen is...
you need to buy up to four wirless touch screen contollers (with multiple logical screens, for multiple buttons)...

perhaps, the new controller, will have parts that slide and flip, to reviel and hide different buttons and analog sticks...

RE: Reggie Dishes Some Dirt

I think it's definately going to be a touch-screen, with some added features. I don't think it will have parts that slide and flip, because that would be a little too flimsy and breakable, imo.

i dont think the the rev contolers will be used for any other games then the rev ones as the gc controlers have enoth buttons in the right places (kind of and apart from the n64 ware not idea but do work) so they have no need for the contoler be used for any other games apart from the rev and i personaly dont think touch screen on the controler is a good idea

Plus, with touch screen you lose the analogs buttons,
something else I imagine is a built in gyroscope (or whatever it is in the Wario Ware twisted game).

I could see a small touch screen built into the controller, but I'm not sure where they might want to put it.

It will be intresting to see how they make it work.
