The Value pack goes well above 500$ (529$ or around there). The battery life usually runs for 6 hours while playing games such as lumines and mahjong. But if you play high graphic games such as Ride Racers, the expected time is about 90 mins - 3 hours.

Wow, that is little battery life. That's I think the biggest negative point on the PSP. How can a portable device cost so much??!! Even if it is a value pack, it shouldn't cost more than 250$.

I've seen them on ebay for 300. That's the valuepack, and RidgeRacers.

Battery life varies depending on how you're using it. Expect 3 to 4 hours of gaming, 6 watching movies, and about 10 playing mp3s.

The 10 hours comes from using the memorstick, and not the UMD. It's interesting to see how much more battery life you can eek out of the unit when it's motor isn't spinning those tiny discs.

15 seconds to load a track on RidgeRacers? Bleh, I'll pass on the import and get it on the US launch.

I thought that watching movies gave you less time than playing games...

Q: How long does the PSP's battery last?

A: The short answer is that it depends on what you're doing. The longer answer is that Sony has stated that the battery should last around six hours. With simpler-looking games like Lumines or Mahjong Fight Club, that definitely seems to be the case. But with more graphically intensive games, like Ridge Racers, the battery doesn't last quite as long. Based on our estimates and a few battery-draining tests, Ridge Racers seems to last somewhere between 90 minutes and three hours. Playing with the wireless networking switch flipped on will also further reduce your battery life. The system has an auto-sleep function that stops the wireless drain, but that switch is there for a reason. Turn it off when you're not using it.

Video and audio will likely drain the battery differently, depending on where the content is coming from. It's less power-intensive to read from the memory stick slot than the UMD drive, though without any audio discs and only one demo video disc full of short game and movie trailers available now, it's difficult to actually put a number on this. Considering that the screen will black out if left unattended, it seems reasonable that you should get a good amount of battery power out of the system when listening to audio.

Re: Official battery life and Price?

Movies do last less time... the UMD disc has to constantly spin thus draining power quicker.

On small power games, like puzzle games, that do not require a constant spin you will achieve 6hrs gameplay.

But with a game like .... MGS with Wi-Fi and full brightness and sound... who knows?! 3 hours max.
