It's amazing how the perception of Sony's PlayStation Portable has changed within a matter of months. "The PSP will elevate portable entertainment out of the handheld gaming ghetto," said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony CEA, at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. "The PSP is full of innovation far superior to anything on the market today. Just as the PlayStation in 1995 revolutionized gaming and the way our industry does business, PSP will serve as the disrupter in the portable entertainment space." However, the way the industry does business also makes it easy for something like the PSP to cause outlandish expectations amongst consumers with statements like that. And the way that consumers ultimately do business requires that quality be partnered with a consistent flow of software for a new system. As electronics history has shown, having great hardware is only part of the equation.

The PSP has traveled the spectrum of being hailed as the greatest piece of.....

Personally, I think it's just another period in the handheld world. It'll eventually get better. Anytime soon? Don't think so =P

The only thing I object too in that article is the way they ignore how guilty the DS is of ports...
It's crazy "Super Mario 64 DS" "Rayman" ("Goldeneye" was likly built from the ground up, so I don't want to pingen hold it as a port) AND THEN all the GBA-Plus games, Madagascar, Star Wars, Robots, the Urbs, etc etc...

Additionaly there is Retro Atari Classics DS, and I'm not entirly sure how that works, or what you count that as.

RE: What

Dude, this article was about the PSP. Sure, I agree the DS has ports, but the GBA developers are doing all kinds of despicable crap. If That's So Raven shows up on the DS, I'm attacking. But Nintendo has some great stuff on the way. Nintendogs is completely original and phenominal in Japan. Advance Wars is a sequel, granted, but it has many new options, much better graphics, and a completely new storyline. Nanostray was an interesting attempt, though it seemed to have failed miserably.

My favorite quote so far.
Quote:
"What the f*** was up with the lack of games for PSP at E3?" wrote David Jaffe, director of God of War, in one of his blog entries. "When I get back, I have to chase down some answers. There has to be a s***load of games being made. Why were they not being shown?"

No it's not. At least not exclusivly. It's about why the DS is doing well and the PSP is not (or atleast not doing as well as people hoped).
The author is crediting the the problem to the over use of porting... and
I'm just trying to point out a flaw in that argument....

Don't confuse sequals with ports... (after you read the article, spefically the part about the the dual shock you'll see what the problem is)

Re: RE: What

I've read the article, and their main focus is on the games in general. They only mention the DS as proof that the PSP isn't doing as it was told it would, "Dominating the market". Also, I like the "What ghetto?" part on the side.

Or maybe that's not the right question to ask. Maybe developers are just losing faith. That certainly may be the case in Japan, where sales of Nintendo DS games have been faring better than sales of PSP games. Six Nintendo DS games placed in the top 20 in sales during the last week of May. Not a single PSP game managed to perform as well
There's the question of how the PS3 will affect the PSP.
during the same time period. This contradicts what people predicted based on earlier trends, which showed sales of PSP hardware and software gaining steam and beating the DS by a significant margin in the early months of 2005.
Right there it sugests that the DS is outselling the PSP (in terms of games) and the reason it gives is that there is too much porting of PS2 games. I find that logic slightly flawed, and wanted to point it out.

RE: Re: RE: What

Umm... Why? That seems pretty logical to me. Crappy games = low sales.

Yeah, I agree with you there no question, maybe it's more that the ported Games are crappy and less that the ported games are ported...
However, that still doesn't explain Rayman DS.
