Resolution is out of the question, I'm not comparing it because if that was the case then handhelds would never catch up to what PC's were 10 years ago. I'm not talking about Source either, i'm talking about the original, which has only slightly better textures and polygons than MPH. I can imagine the graphics of HL and those other PC games ending up on DS in a couple years, just look at how far GBA improved over the years for 3D graphics.

I'll stick to easier control schemes (mouse/keyboard, analog sticks, Wii-mote, etc) that don't hurt my hands/wrists.
Use the thumb strap, it's a LOT more comfortable.

It took forever for Nintendo to release a handheld capable of 32bit and when they did the graphics were barely better than SNES. I wouldn't exactly call that an improvement.
The main problem with handhelds is their tiny screens. The resolution is really low and doesn't lend itself well to 3D. If they would put hi-def screens in the handhelds, it would be another story, but that would increase the price too much. At the very least Nintendo should've used larger screens (and not spaced them out so much, it makes some games look weird).

The GBA was limited by graphic processing power more than anything, IMO 32bit doesn't say much for what a system is really capable of. The developers came up with rendering engines over the years as they learned how to squeeze every ounce of power out of it, and it almost got as good as Metal Gear Solid (more of a proof of concept though).
Resolution will improve over time, but as far as I know there aren't LCD screens with pixels small enough for the hi def you're looking for. Besides, they already use a technology similar to hi-def screens and PC's, it's LCD with a specific signal to each pixel instead of CRT with a projection on a photosensitive layer (or the transmission signal designed for such a screen as used with traditional TV's). I don't think pixel sizes have changed all that much over the years, handhelds probably have some of the smallest pixels because it's more important to get a crisp image when viewed up close. Screens can only get so large before they start to lose that handheld factor, I'd say DS is about 75% of what the max should be for an on-the-go fit-in-your-pocket gaming system, which is a safe level.
I somewhat agree with what you say about the gap between the screens, but it hasn't bothered me that much since it's usually only noticeable during "tall" movies or in menus with a background stretched across the screens. It would be hard to get it really close while keeping it foldable anyway.

If they used a hinge on either side of the screen (like a laptop) instead of almost one solid hinge in the middle design they could've made the screens almost touch.
Pixels sizes haven't really changed a whole lot, true, but they still could've gone with a screen about 20% larger. All they would've had to do (on the original DS) was make the screen take up the full space (take up the black part on the top and the grooved part on the bottom).

It's been said so many times that it's actually pathetic to consider someone thinks they're giving an interesting opinion. (No offense, grim)
