I see their reasoning behind it, it's all for money. If people get the cheaper version sooner or later they'll probably want the better one and that means more money going into Sony. That is assuming they actually make money on them, or maybe they're hoping for higher sales to carry it, I'm not sure but I know they have some sort of plan firmly focused on money.

G-d, you could almost buy a ****ing laptop with 600 USD. No one in their right mind would pay that much for a gaming console. But then again, considering how much we value leisure, it may be reasonable to many.

seriously though i think sony made a good call having a HDD as standard in every PS3. it means devs can assume that there is something there at least. at the same time, it really should be upgradeable. technically u could get a 360 core pack and upgrade it over time to a deluxe pack.
as for blue-ray, it wouldnt be too bad of BR was guranteed to be the standard for all movies..but its not. BR could go the way of UMD, making that extra money u payed for it in the PS3 useless. games will not get up to 25gb in size unless the devs decide to put loads of movie footage in with it (which is pointless since the ingame graphics will be gorgeous).
then theres the cell....why? what was the point? if u want to beat MS at processing power just get ibm to put in 8 threads or something. would probably be alot cheaper. its not gonna shake the industry in any way. there is barely any support for it. even IBM arent really using it, there just using there own chips. it really looks like another emotion engine mess :S.
the motion sensor on the controller, though nowhere near as good as the WIIs, is a nice little addition. hopefullly it will make some games more interesting.
and the price....wow. they may have gotten away with that in the past since there was no effective competition but are they aware that MS wants there head on a stick, and they have the weaponary to do it?
i dont know....sony seem to have lost the plot all together. they have gone the way of nintendo of old in terms of attitude and arrogance. history may very well repeat itself. still the sony and playstation names are very strong brands, especially in the west.
nintendo are offering a very nice alternative though. a cheap console (hopefully), cheapish games (please o please), in built memory for storage, card reader for more storage and (if the rumour is true) the ability to attach any external HDD for extra storage. the controller sounds really kewl (from what i heard from e3) and the games shown for the Wii were very well recieved (bar the odd annoyance in terms of control).
based on e3 anyway, ninty should be very pleased with themselves, as should MS (the halo 3 trailer has alot of ppl excited). sony also has some very positve points (mgs4 for example) but ppl seem very annoyed at the way they are handling the PS3 and there arrogance in general.

i agree with you most parts apart from the bit about sonys motion sensor its not its just a gyroscope which has been in games and controlers for about 7 years now... and they are just marketing it as a motion sensor to show there as good as nintedo in there controler which the average joe whos knows nothing will beleve it is and i doubt it will be used in many games as as it does not look to be that responsive and is well... limited in its functions thats why nintedo have put it in the num chuck attachment to add to the controlernad be an aid you could say... to the main controler.

anyway yea as i said its no where near as good as the wii system.
hmm i dont know. considering that its the standard in every PS2 controller, and the fact that its very easy to develop for (from what i heard at e3), id say that a good few games will use it to some degree, especially if the PS3 gets wii ports.

We are a rare breed of gamer. We read reviews online, scour the internet for the latest news, watch festivals like E3; the average gamer does not do all this. They buy what is popular and unfortunately, whether it is deserved or undeserved, the PS3 will probably be the most popular machine next-gen.

The increased price only makes it more desirable. What is the most expensive "current-gen" console? By my counting, in the UK at least, the PS2 is. Which console has sold the most?

i've talked to a whole lot of "casual" gamers who don't even know what E3 is and what not, and they think PS3 is gonna blow anyway.

so europe can have fun with their little gay overpriced PS3s
