RE: CODED ARMS
Well all this talk about which is the best console (Gamecube) and handheld(DS id say, haven't actually used it yet, cmon march 11th) and there is very little mention about the most powerful, most versatile and largest console, the PC (i know, not a console), and the mobile version the Laptop (not Handheld i tried to my cost  ).
This is all my opinion of course: The PC is a fantastic games machine and is usually way ahead of consoles in terms of technology. Online play, wireless play, LAN Play were all done on the PC first and it still does it best. It has a great Mod community so when you buy a game you can always download extras for it to make it las longer. The Graphics are second to none and on a high resolution large monitor all looks very sweet. Controls used to be a problem but now the most used keys are W A S D and the mouse. Technology is always driving foreward on it and you can upgrade, change and customise it as much as you want. It's not perfect of course. A top of the range PC is obsenely expensive at around the €3000 mark. Every game you buy will need a patch and some games will just not work. Then there are the viruses and trojans that you need to deal with. But when it works, and it has gottn better, oh man it is sweet. PLaying Half life 2 on a 21inch monitor at 1024X768 with all the bells and whistles with a 7.1 surround sound system. There is nothing like it. Consoles are great of course. I have 2 and play them alot. Some games like Prince of persia and Zelda wouldn't really work with a mouse and keyboard. But the PC is a very fine games machine, its the platform games are developed on and its where alot of new game ideas come from. Thats my opinion anyway. What do you think? |

RE: The PC
No i dont think it is out yet. Also yes i would prefer a really sweet computer over any system because of online play and all this other awesome stuff.

I'm a PC guy, I barely ever touch consoles (only one I have is an original PlayStation) except when I'm extremely bored and want to play a game I used to enjoy all the time. I used to play PSX a lot before I got my own PC, but now that I have my own PC the PSX collects loads of dust. I've upgraded my PC from 350MHz to 1.7GHz (AMD) and loads and loads of other upgrades, total cost from nothing to where I am now is probably around $800 give or take (all my hardware and known costs are on my site). Now I'm sorta anti-console/pro-PC, but I still love my DS cause it's not a console, it's very unique and very portable and very fun. I'm all set for online DS with a wireless router, which is needed for all 5 desktops, 2 laptops, and iPAQ to connect. Also have a 4mbit/384kbit cable connection to handle all the online gaming and stuff. I'm behind on a few things such as audio hardware and motherboard/CPU, but as long as I can game without much lag I'll be happy. I wonder why so many people have problems with viruses and bugs and all that junk, but I need to remind myself that not everyone spends some 50 hours a week on their PC to teach themselves all the wonders of all the software (especially freeware and built-in) that can fix those problems. I almost never get blue screens unless I get a badly programmed game that doesn't like my video drivers, and viruses don't have a chance with my router firewall and anti-virus, topped with ePrompter to delete spam without the bad code ever touching my system. Also, a PC monitor properly set up (which is really easy BTW) has a much better refresh rate than most TV's, so less strain on the eyes, my monitor is set for 85Hz, which is the highest this old thing will go.
Handhelds and consoles have more variety? I don't think so, PC's are frequently custom built (the best kind IMO) and most PC companies like Dell will let you pick from their limited selection of parts, so PC hardware varieties are endless. As for software, there's loads of freeware and retail games as well as demos and stuff, so that means there's got to be more games available for PC, and lots of completely free stuff you can only dream of on a console. Anyways I could go on and on about how PC's>consoles, but I need to hit the sack... |

Don't blame PC's, the hardware is fine, blame the operating system for being fundementally insecure.

plmars gentoo now quick!! I can't believe you are wasting that away with a 32bit operating system with 32bit apps, what a sad sad waste :( oh man I'd love to try out the 64bit version of UT2004 that was only made for GNU/Linux :(

good point on the Phantom
as for blaming the operating system the way trouble shooting goes is 1 Check if the user is to blame 2 then check for crappy software 3 then check for faulty hardware. We have all made stupid mistakes on our PCs (except me..... ALRIght i blew up the power supply once and i have a long and embarassing sound card story  ). I cant wait for 64bit games. I have an AMD 64 3000+ on my laptop dealing with only 32 bit wiondows and linux. I have to wait till gentoo is released on a mag cd since i only have a 56k connection. I live in Ireland where a 512 kbps connection costs €40 and is considered state of the art. A sad state of affairs. But yeah the pc is the finest gaming machine in my opinion. Itll be cool to have a kind os Mouse/Keyboard interface on the DS with the touch screen and directional buttons. |
