I honestly think the PS3 is going to completely bomb. See look:

1) The price is too high. That alienates most non-hardcore and budget gamers entirely.
2) The Cell is highly over-rated, and no one knows even how to use it properly. It'll be many years before anything can actually harness it. Thus, the PS3 will be about on-par with the 360 for the first few years.
3) Sony has no online service. That right there is just downright stupid.
4) Design-wise, both the controller and the system are, well, retarted looking. This is a bit more opinionated, and will have less impact on sales, but it is a factor. That controller is a joke among most gamers.
5) With no online service to speak of, how will Sony allow for downloadable content and such? Xbox Live has it's little arcade and marketplace, and Nintendo has the entire back-catalog of games up for grabs, Sony has no extra features and no nostalgia factor. Also eliminates a large portion of the casual market.
6) What I think is the most important factor of all. The PS3 is literally so advanced that it takes millions more to actually develop a game for it using the included technlogies. The Cell has 9 cores, in an era where people are just learning how to program on 2 and 3. 9 is a programmer's nightmare, and nobody knows how to nor wants to write code for that. Also, Blu-ray discs are setting up to be much more expensive, increases production costs as well as retail prices on games.

So, from where I'm sitting, as someone who's actually aware of how this industry works, and not in some Sony-branded fantasy world like some people (and I should note, not in a Nintendo or Microsoft one either), the PS3 is setting up to be Sony's downfall.

nmaster64 how do you add friends because you are my HERO you kick 4$$ SONY KILLERS UNITED!! i hate sony and you are defending the company that started the portable market really and they have kicked arse up till GC which unfortunantly I am a Nintendo fanboy through THICK and thin So I had to get it and it wasn't the worst I liked it unlike most ppl. Though Nintendo is gonna be at the top again like when the NES came out when the Revolution comes out. Maybe it won't be the most popular system out there but Nintendo will be back to its former glory. all my friends are idiots they think that the PSP is a way better portable device than the DS and i admit it is a better mp3 player bc DS isn't a multimedia device it is a GAMING device which the PSP is selling as haha my foot.
O and b4 i'm done can someone tell me if the Revolution is coming with the Analog attachment or do you have to buy it seperatly? and can someone put the sale comparison of DS to PSP up soon thanks. moofpi out

Nmaster is a total N Fanboy. However he's not wrong. But I wouldn't go so far as to call you an "industry insider"...

We can't really call the PS3 "Sony's downfall" yet, because Sony hasn't said a word. Obviously, that can be taken as being negative, or somehow positive. Fact is, until Sony starts talking, the PS3 doesn't exist. Like at CES, where they displayed the case but with the words "Conceptual" clearly sticking out, and a lack of controller. All reasons to believe that we really don't know what the hell Sony is doing. Now, certainly there's some major technology being hyped as being built-in to the PS3, and that they'd have to sell it at a major loss in order for it to be acceptable. But, selling at a loss is something Sony's always been doing with the PlayStation.

We don't know if Sony will have an online service. We don't know if the controller and console design are permanent. We don't know how much they are going to sell the PS3 for. All we can do is speculate. Same goes with Nintendo, although they've been more verbose than Sony has regarding their new console, so there are a few things that we know for sure (online service, "classic" game download, etc.) Far be it from me to promote Sony, but we can't go around flaming something that doesn't exist.

Actually, a Sony rep recently confirmed those things...

Yes, I would agree I am a fanboy, but I'm a bit different than say, well, Moofpi there (no offense dude, but you need to settle down a wee bit.)

And I didn't say I was an "insider" really...but I do extensive research on many aspects of the industry, much more than your aware of. I may not have much "inside" info, but I would say I'm much more knowledgable than the average gamer...

I don't believe a word the "reps" say, because a few of the things that they have said in the past have proven to be quite the opposite. And, I was talking about the full functioning controller. It's not here yet. So, there's still a chance there could be minor tweaks here and there. As for the online service, who knows? They may not have it until God knows when, or it could not appear at all. Sony has a tendency to "go with the flow."

Yeah, but it's possible it may just come too late...and if it does come, what if it isn't free?

I'd say that's one of their biggest mistakes.
