The UMD's has major drawbacks as well. 3 out of 5 of my UMD's are collapsed from the inside. Their too fragile

it could have possibly worked if sony licenced other companies to make UMD players (or made them themselves). granted it would have somewhat taken away from the PSP but it could have been a nice source revenue for sony.
the fact that they are as expensive as DVDs and that they can only be played on the psp, a device that can play DVD movies when they are converted and plonked onto a memory stick, meant that it was always going to be difficult for UMD to be a success once people found out that they could use their existing DVDs.

Slashdot posted what seems to be a somewhat repeditive article on this subject, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Quote:
Everyone Hates UMD

PSP-Fanboy writes "More bad news for the UMD, which is already dying a speedy death at retail: not only are stores not stocking them, but no one really wants to buy UMD movies either. Although 40% of PSP owners claimed UMD media was a big reason why they plopped down a few hundred on Sony's pixel-spurting game brick, the complaint from actual owners is there just isn't anything worth goddamn buying on UMD."
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../05/20/2031250

One of the more humorous things about the article was the tags:
Quote:
[+] duh, sony, umd, psp, obvious (tagging beta)

If UMD's are dead, PSP is dead, which still has a little more life in it.

You see, there are these things called "games", "homebrew", "web browsing", and "digital media" which are holding it up. Heck, on my trip this weekend a moron claimed that the PSP was better than an iPod for media. Bull.

Much of that non-UMD stuff is being shot down by Sony, especially the homebrew which seems to be the strong point for PSP.

Universal Media Disk...ha...if there was a UMD player for a TV the quality would suck because they have less than half the memory of a DVD
