It looks pretty awesome. But by any means, it can't be .gif. That filetype is not suited for such big animations. You should really try to make the main animations in flash, though you can still use the pictures themself.

I wouldd've had a go at it, if I could fix my laptop and find my old Flash install.

I think until the size is reduced with Flash or something, just have it a still image.

I have a 1.5Mbit line so it don't take long to load, though there are still users with a pretty slow connection and maybe even a modem, and 500kb is way over what it should be.

The problem with .gif is that it saves it image by image, if the animations are done in Flash the filesize could easily go down to ~40-100kb depending on how the images are a compressed. Because flash saves the animations as a code, not image by image. (Atleast I think that's how it works. ;p)
