haha i remember our last experience with sig issues.... ah, the good old days.
but yeah, i think we do need to do that. some people's sigs are absolutely massive (nmaster >_>) Last edited by nmaster64; 11-08-2006 at 08:23 AM. Reason: need a line for measurement |

That is specifically why there is such an option in the User CP. I turned off sigs ages ago (most people's are boring anyway). As long as I can see their avatar, I'm good.

Its not a loading problem, its more of a prefence problem... what is more important, the person's sig or their post? In my opinion large sigs take up too much space and distract the reader from the convorsation going on in the thread and make him/her look at the sig and takes away from the overall of the site.

One advantage is that it helps identify people quicker, as long as it's not someone impersonating someone. I agree that some sigs are way too big, the userbars are next to useless, sigs should be purely for information that is useful (like your website or game stats, not static images and quotes). Now that that's said, I should edit mine to fit those rules so I'm not considered a hypocrite.

I agree, long sigs make it hard to find content. I'm talking vertical length, not width BTW. Width means nothing...
My sig is not big! I shrunk it as much as I possibly could! And it's certainly not large in terms of file size (<100k)... Sig Height Approximates (in pixels) Nmaster: 270 - mormon: 325 - theOne: 160 - Lkr: 315 - DSDude: 140 - MarioFamous: 270 - Pilot: 115 Someone's a hypocrite! (mormon >_>) 300 seems like a good max height...

Right, sig width isn't a problem as long as images have a reasonably small width, which we've almost never had a problem with. The content of the sig really makes a difference of how big it looks, the massive picture area in yours kinda makes it look bigger than Mormon's, but even that isn't a problem. Height is the only problem as far as size goes.
It should be limited based on a common screen resolution, which is usually 800x600 or 1024x768. I suggest making it so the sig and message can be the same height and both still be fully visible at a low resolution and a general browser view size, somewhere between 200 and 300 pixels would be a good limit. I think there's one problem though, I don't believe there's an option to limit the sig by height, only by characters, and I don't think it would really be possible since images load after the sig is saved. We might need to enforce it ourselves, and I don't like the character limit because I could have a long URL to a small image or for a small hyperlink and I could hit the limit even if the sig height would only be 100 pixels (I've had something like that happen before). |
