There should be a BIOS option to change that, my desktop has temperature safety features in BIOS.
You might also want to get a CPU temperature monitor. The one I use is called Motherboard Monitor, which monitors not only temperature of CPU, case, and other devices with temp monitoring such as hard drives, video cards, and RAM, but also fan speeds and voltages, and offers a highest/lowest/average log, alarm options, and emergency shutdown features. It might be a bit advanced for casual users though.

thanks for the help guys, i went to work and came back when it was cooler and used it on a desk rather than my lap and didnt have any issues :D

and thanks for the info pilot i might check out that thing... the case on my laptop isnt well ventilated it only has one opening for a fan where the CPU is... i usually take out the PCMIA card filler thing to vent off the hdd... coz yeah naturally the battery and the sourrounding things get hot but the hdd area seems to get really hot only the core of the laptop where the cpu and ram are is ventilated properly...
